"I'll Never Love Over again" is a vocal from the 2018 motion picture A Star Is Born, performed past its stars Lady Gaga and managing director Bradley Cooper whose grapheme sings the last chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the song including the extended version that featured Gaga as the sole performer. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced past Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The vocal has received widespread critical acclaim and has reached the top of the Slovakian digital charts, the pinnacle-ten of the tape charts in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Hellenic republic, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Espana. "I'll Never Honey Once more" received a contemporary hit radio release in France as the anthology's third single on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Accolade for Best Vocal Written for Visual Media, a year after the anthology's pb single "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting ready to movie the final scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Love Once more", the singer got a phone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her final moments of Stage Four cancer. Gaga left the set up and drove to meet Durham, but she arrived ten minutes afterward her friend died. She asked Durham'south married man if she should return to filming; he replied, "You've gotta practise what Sonja would want yous to practice", so she returned to the fix. Co-star and manager Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss but Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, so she stepped on the fix and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The vocalizer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic souvenir that mean solar day and I took information technology with me to [the] set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very aforementioned day within an hour."[1]

Forth with the film version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[ii] [three] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[iv] The song is performed in the key of M major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in mutual time. It follows a chord progression of 1000add2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/Eastward–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga's vocals span from G3 to Efive.[five] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the song equally a "weepy" ballad.[six]

Release and performance [edit]

The song was first called every bit the tertiary single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[7] After soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States[8] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the country, while accumulating 66 million streams.[9] Additionally, the song has reached the top ten position in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the meridian x of digital charts in Greece, Spain and Luxembourg, reaching the chart summit in Slovakia.

Disquisitional reception [edit]

The song received universal acclaim. In her review of the motion picture, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[10] The mag's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's performance of "I'll Never Love Again" equally the motion picture's best scene and wrote, "Non only are the lyrics devastatingly cute, but Gaga/Ally showcases her full, skyscraper-loftier range."[eleven] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the vocal to Harry Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric Carmen'south "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga's "old-schoolhouse finesse, timing, emotionality and lung ability".[12] Pitchfork 'southward Larry Fitzmaurice chosen the song a "stunning, eye-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Dearest Again' is enough effective on its ain, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its concluding seconds the same fashion the film does: jumping back in fourth dimension from Gaga'due south fourth dimension-stopping performance to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that just enhances the song's emotional quotient".[13]

In his film review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said Gaga's "climactic memorial" performance of the vocal "will leave you a soggy mess whether you like it or not".[xiv] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Honor nomination for All-time Original Song.[15] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Honey Again,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her ain Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about love and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It's a transcendent accomplishment that could single-handedly internet the vocalizer-turned-actress her first Oscar, reminding us all the same over again that she's ane of the all-time vocalists right now in any genre, pop or otherwise."[sixteen]
